Greetings:
Once again, we sincerely thank the participants of "BUILDING TRANSFORMATIONAL ALLIANCES IN THE 21st CENTURY" discussion, held at the Open Society Institute on Thursday, August 4th, in New York City.
We would also like to offer our sincere apologies to those who were not able to attend due to over booking. The interest and responses exceeded our expectation and capacity, respectively. Over 150 people, from a broad range of groups and organizations, sent in their rsvps. The space capacity was 100, but at the end we were able to squeeze in about 115.
In the interests of furthering the discussion, those who attended the event, please take a few minutes to give us your honest thoughts and feedback as we entertain ideas to hold similar, and possibly, bigger "Soul" events.
We would like to thank our sponsors, partners & individuals for making last Thursday event possible: Demos, OSI Racial Justice Initiative, West Harlem Environmental Action, Green Worker Cooperatives, Make the Road by Walking, Alvin Starks, Noel Pinero, & Sheila Harris of OSI, Cole Krawitz & Tim Rusch of Demos, Ginna Green of Full Court Press, RP's intern Jane Malmgren and volunteer-extraordinaire Minh-Huyen Nguyen. And last, but not least, Ti-Hua Chang of WCBS for taking his time out to moderate the event.
Please send us your thoughts and comments to soul@rprogress.org.
Thank you.
A sampling of comments from participants -- what they learned, heard or stood out at the event:
"I appreciate the inclusion of labor issues in the discussion among the panelists, but would have loved a labor leader on the panel..."
"Converging movements -- it's one of the more challening issues."
"I realized how racial & class issues entertwined in environmentalism."
"The possibility of future dialogue between environmentalists."
And what/who was missing from the discussion:
"More young people on the panel."
"Cultural perspective -- how movements around cultural democracy connected to this discussion."
And what to do next:
"Larger on-going discussions."
"People attending this talk need to start with others...people need to decide how they can take action in their own lives in order to build transformational alliances."
